The Nightmare Of Renovating Your Home
You need to renovate your home. Maybe knock out some walls to make more interior space, re-do your kitchen or bathroom, finish out your basement as a rec room, etc.
You just don’t have the time or expertise to do all of this yourself so you decide to hire a contractor.
Here’s a very typical scenario:
You talk to a neighbor or a friend and get the name of a contractor (or you just go to the yellow pages or the internet). The contractor meets you at your home. You describe to him what you want in as much detail as you can muster up at the time. He asks questions and you answer them ‘off the cuff’ based on emotion and not much real knowledge. Either then or at some time in the very near future he gives you a price. The price may be in your budget or it may not. Let’s assume that his price is reasonably close to your budget figure so you tell him to go ahead and here is what follows:
§ The contractor brings you a contract form and since he’s such a nice guy and says what you want to hear you sign it.
§ After he gets started on your project and as time goes on he begins to tell you about all the things it will take to complete the job that he did not figure in his cost. His rationale is that you didn’t tell him that these things were to be included. Your response, of course, is that he should have known they would be included since getting things built the way an owner wants is his job.
§ Typically these are not really big items but he is so convincing and you know so little about the process and the situation that you seem to have no choice but to OK them. After all, at this stage of the project what else are you going to do?
§ At this point he has the upper hand in a really big way. After a short while, this series of “small” items mushroom into a figure 25% or more over your budget. The contractor has methodically justified all of this by getting you to approve an onslaught of relatively small items as the work progresses.
§ You have, by default, set the precedent for approving his claims whether or not they are really justified.
§ Weeks later you suddenly see the accumulated total but it’s too late.
§ There’s more but this is the essence of what can and typically does happen, to one degree or another.
§ The good news is that in large part the above scenario can, in most cases, be easily avoided.

Pool Pumps: Consider Long Term Expenses
A swimming pool in your backyard can be the perfect space for you and your family to share the weekends without having to travel far. Not only that, a swimming pool can also double as an aesthetic fixture for your home. But then, only a few can afford this kind of amenity and those who can afford it always learn that it is not a simple project to start. There are a lot of things that needs to be considered – from finding reputable people to construct your pool to choosing from a variety of pool pumps the one that you think is perfect for your purpose.
Looking for the best swimming pool pump should be one of your top priorities when it comes to the pool’s construction. It is because the pool pump will be responsible for ensuring that there will always be enough water in your pool and that it will be safe for swimming. It would be easier to just purchase the most expensive one in the market to make sure that you have top of the line pool pump motors. But then, the quality of your pool pump will not necessarily be dependent on its price. Factors like the size of the pool, the availability of spare parts and the quality of the aftersales warranty services should be considered first.
Just remember that when purchasing your pool pump, you should think about the potential costs it might incur in the future. Pool pumps are expensive and the last thing that you would want is to buy another one in the future. With good anticipation, you can cut down your possible maintenance and repair expenses by more than half. Just like any other long-term investments, all of the possible options must be exhausted first. And you should ready your budget so that you can spend for the long-term best.

The benefits of garage conversions are fairly obvious, more space equals better quality of living and potential a nice increase in your home’s market value, but what can you actually do with one? In this article I’m going to talk about the 3 best ways to utilize a converted garage which ensures the process is worth your while.
Facts are facts, the needs of families can shift year after year, the initial two or three bedroom house might have been sufficient at one point, but as children grow older they will want their own space, whether that be a larger bedroom or simply any room they don’t have to share with a sibling. If you happen to find yourself in this situation garage conversions can be a very good idea, whether or not you actually use the original garage space as an extra room or simply reorganize you home and use it as a storage facility is up to you.
If you find yourself catching up on a lot of work at home or even work from home entirely it may be a good idea to convert that seldom used garage into an office. As long as the conversion is insulated properly there’s absolutely no reason you can’t set up a computer desk and chair and work quite happily. The added bonus of doing this of course is you don’t need to carry any heavy office furniture upstairs because it’ll all be situated on the ground floor.
Finally, dining and games rooms are one of the most popular reasons garage conversions are done in the first place. If you really don’t make use of your garage and find yourself with very little space for hosting dinner parties or for the kids to play in this could be the perfect solution. All of these examples are a great way to utilize extra living space without having to build and extension which can be rather costly.

Pros and Cons of Using Wicker Furniture for your Patio
Wicker furniture is made from natural fibers like bamboo and rattan. Synthetic materials also make up some of the eye-catching modern wicker furniture that you see today. Wicker has a very distinct style that has become the benchmark for other outdoor furniture when calling to mind furniture that immediately evokes a very tropical feel to it.
Wicker is generally made from natural materials that have been treated and woven to a frame made of wood, stainless steel or aluminum. However, these natural materials are prone to rot or decay if they are not well maintained. Untreated natural material can also be attacked by parasites like termites and will not last long. By combining the natural materials with synthetic materials like steel frames, the life of wicker furniture is prolonged.
Synthetic fibers made of plastic or resin has even greater disadvantages over natural fibers. Wicker furniture made from synthetic fibers comes in many colors and you do not have to limit yourself to brown or experience paint peeling and fading due to rough handling and time. The colors do not fade and being synthetic makes them immune to attacks from termites.
Wicker furniture is very light but can hold a lot weight because of the material and weaving technique that is employed during weaving. They can be moved around easily because they are lightweight.
Natural outdoor all weather wicker furniture is usually placed outside so it is also important to take care of them to make sure that they will last long. Just because it says all weather on the tag, it does not mean that you will just leave it outside all the time. They need to be stored during intense rain, cold or heat. Synthetic wicker furniture does not need as much maintenance as those made from natural fibers. They only require an occasional wipe when they get dirty but can be washed when they have large amounts of dirt or stain. You can even use them as an indoor wicker furniture if you love them so much.
Price-wise, wicker costs lasts less than other kinds of furniture especially if you can get discount wicker furniture. But the only downside is that they collect dust between the weaves. But this is easily remedied by just a few washes.

Proper DIY Instructions For A Shed Building Project
Without a doubt it takes a lot of work and motivation to build your own shed. However, as you probably understand, it’s definitely worth it, because you will not only save tons of cash, but also gain useful woodworking expertise, which may come handy in the future with other DIY projects you may want to complete.
It’s important that you construct a shed, which will last for many years, not just few months. In order to do that, you must follow appropriate shed plans to ensure that your building ethic is according to the safety standards of the construction industry. There’s no point of rushing things and end up with a worthless project.
Probably a good idea to start with is determining the correct size of your backyard. Usually this is done by measuring your garden area and making sure that the wood storage shed will still keep your outdoor leisure area practical for every day use. Also it’s important to ensure that you’ll be able to store all your belongings in the shed.
It’s also recommended that you check with your local authority, if you need any special shed building permit. This is not always required, depending on the area you live in, but it’s better to know the law, rather than break it and face stupid fines from the government. Therefore, sort this out before starting any work on the woodworking design.
Choosing where to place the shed goes along with selecting the size. When you are doing this, you should take both aspects in consideration. While you would want to have a good-sized shed to keep bulky items, such as gardening equipment and bicycles, you don’t want a massive shed the size of your house.
You may also be interested in building a metal shed, rather than the traditional wood type. It’s all about your own preference, but people say it’s easier to work with wood materials, which is quite true, so for your first project, it’s a good idea to go for the wood shed project. Remember to use DIY storage shed plans at all times.
